Q: What and why exactly causes the the stock wrx intercooler y pipe to split or crack?
I heard WRX’s have a bad history of having their stock IC y-pipe split or crack under boost. What exactly and why does it do that? Are the stock WRX’s not meant to be boosted if thats the case? Sorry for the noob question. I new to cars. Thanks for your help!

A: Well you either heard wrong or whoever told you over exaggerated the fact. It does happen but it’s not something that I would call a common issue. They are made of a sort of a soft plastic and things like age and the climate where the car spends it’s days can cause them to weaken and crack. It doesn’t take much of an opening to effect boost. I live in the north west and put a total of about 200,000 miles on 3 WRX’s and never had the issue. But I suppose in places like Arizona, it could be an issue. Some silicone hoses would fix it easily and not cost a whole lot.

Q: What’s the difference between the 05 subaru wrx and the 05 sti?
What are the differences between the two? And what needs to be done to the body of the wrx to make it look as good as the sti?
This will be my first car so I want it to look great and have average power, so I know it would be a little ricer like but I dont need any more power I just want it to look better. And I can’t afford the sti..

A: STI has 300hp/tq, where the WRX has around 227hp/217lb-ft tq for that year. The STI is also completely loaded up in the handling and stopping section, with its stiffer suspension, and huge brembo brake kit. The STI is just a lot more track ready version of the WRX. Theirs endless possibilities to make an 05 WRX look just as good or better then an 05 STI. you just have to search on websites, and find exterior mods that suit your needs. Lowering springs or coilovers would be my first exterior mod though, followed by a nice set of wheels. Also, if you can find an 06 WRX around the same price, I would think about getting that. The 06 is were they introduced the 2.5l to the WRX, which in turn increased hp to 230 and tq to 235. The 2.5 will also come in handy if you plan on upgrading your turbo, as it will give you a wider range of turbos to choose from without having to do an engine swap.

Q: Where is the best insurance company to insure a subaru wrx turbo?
Im 40 years old and am going to be buying a subaru wrx turbo ,can anyone suggest a good insurance company and how much roughly would it be to insure it fully comp .THANKS .

A: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance

They show you a method to search just about every insurer.

I’ve just gone with Swiftcover. Cheap *and* online.

Q: What car should I get 350z or subaru wrx sti?
I am 16 years old and my dad bought a 2004 350z. I really had no influence on this buy. I was looking at 2005 subaru wrx sti. I dont know which to get because I like the 350z but it only has 2 seats while the wrx has 5. Please tell me which one you would choose, and the + and – of each car.

A: depends what youre looking for…

the STI is faster, has AWD for better handling… smaller engine but with a turbo which has a few advantages… like if youre not making boost (turbo doesnt kick in till like 2500 rpms) youll be using less gas (but good luck trying NOT to go fast in that car)… like you said seats 5, 4 doors etc etc

the 350 is a sexy looking car… lower, lighter, smaller… powerful v6, nice interior and sound system (that bose is amazing)…

like i said it all depends on what youre looking for.. if you want the looks and the fun of RWD go for the 350

if you want the rally type experience: fast, fun, challenging… go with the STI.. and as far as perfomance mods go, it’ll be easier to make the STI faster because its already turbo’d… you want more power out the 350, the largest gains in HP will come from forced induction

now ive got to do the responsible thing and give you a little pep talk… first off youre only 16 and im 90% sure you wont be paying for this car all by yourself… if i were you id get a beater car that you can learn to drive on (and not get too upset when you damage it)… both the cars youre looking at are beasts and take experience to drive, so that should probably be your first priority

Q: Is it easy to take a turbo off a subaru wrx?
im asking this because i might get a 97′ subaru wrx wagon.Due to victorian laws i cant drive it with a turbo, so is it easy to take it off? and if i do, do i have to take the intercooler off as well?

Also, would this be expensive or a relatively cheap job?

A: You must be in the UK. I suspect it might be a difficult task due to the fact that you’d have to set up the engine to run without the turbo. I would find a very skilled mechanic or take it to a Subaru dealer.

Q: how much would i cost to rebuild a 2007 subaru wrx sti engine?
I’m planning on owning a 2007 subaru wrx or an sti. How much is maintenance with moderate driving not racing or pushing the car to hard, i don’t drive to crazy. My question and my real answer i’m looking for is how much if it happened would a engine rebuild price be and also transmission rebuild.

A: For that car if you had to rebuild the engine and transmission together at once the car would be effectively totaled. Rebuilds on turbocharged boxer engines are outrageously expensive, and when you add in a 4 wheel drive transmission you’d be looking at a total of around $12,000 US.

Q: Is it possible to upgrade a wrx to a sti?
Engine, brakes all that. But keep the automatic transmission of the wrx?
Thanks to those that actually had answers! For 1, I can drive a stick. I just prefer the 6spd in the 05 sti. If there were a better automatic, like a 5eat or something, I would get that. I just prefer the 02 wrx to be an auto and thought about increasing it’s displacement.

A: The 4EAT auto’s in the WRX’s aren’t great but they are strong so they can handle the power of an STI engine easily. Probably quite a bit more. As far as actually switching to an STI engine and ECU, that’s a good question. Not sure if the STI ECU will work with the TCU for the auto tranny. Might be easier to just look to just look to switching out the short block to a 2.5liter and mod from there to add some power. Wiring in an STI ECU and motor is a lot of work when you can make similar power with your current set up. Brakes and wheels will have to be 5X100 bolt pattern which only came on the 04 STI’s here in the US so they will take some time to track down. Don’t worry so much about making it an STI because that’s just a company name. You can make your car pretty quick, just read up on http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/ to learn what options you have and maybe find a good tuner in your area on there to help you reach your goals.

Q: How much monthly would it cost me to lease a 2008 subaru impreza wrx?
Well im highly considering leasing a 2008 subaru impreza wrx for 3 or 4 years. With around 2 thousand down on the car how much do you think I will have to pay monthly lets say if i lease it for 3 years or maybe 4 years.

A: Your best bet is to go to a dealer and ask. If they have lease offerings going on they will tell you the exact amount you have to pay. Leases are tricky because the terms are usually set by the lender. You can’t just go in and say I have this much and only want to pay this much like with a loan.

Q: What kind of exhaust should i get for my wrx?
Hey, i just a 07 Limited Wrx Urban gray. What kind of exhaust should i get? I was thinking about the megan racing turbo cat back or the greddy evo2. I need something not too loud but sounds sexy. What other upgrades do u recommend?

A: The Megan unit is pretty nice for the price but they are loud. Stick with the Greddy for a nice low rumble that is not too loud. And don’t get a turbo back unless you get tuned for it. You will get boost creep and could blow your motor if you go full throttle on a hot day. As far as other mods, it depends on how far you want to go. I would work on suspension to get that out of the way while you get used to the power you have. Join and research NASIOC.com in the mean time.

Q: What is the difference between both 2006 wrx tr and Wrx ?
I was wondering what was the difference is. I know the wr tr meens tuner ready but what the difference between the tuner ready edition than the regular 2006 wrx. Looks like they both have the same 2.5l engine and td04 turbo chargers.

A: The difference is that the TR comes with less. The TR has cheaper seats that arent as nice as the WRX seats. Further it comes with a lesser stereo unlike the 6disc changer in the WRX and also it doesnt have fog lights or a spoiler like the WRX. I think thats about it though.

Q: What oil should I use in a 1997 Subaru WRX engine?
I have a 1997 Subaru WRX, not sure if it is a STi, and don’t know what oil to use! I don’t mind on what brand it is, just want to know what grade is best!
It has a ZeroSport computer from Japan in it, and runs 18 pound boost. Does that make any difference?

A: Mobil 1 is the best! It is expensive but well worth it. You get better gas mileage and more performance out of your car. A win win is what I say.

use man. req. like 5/20 or 5w/30 they sell for all makes

Q: SUBARU WRX WAGON 2002, where can I buy affordable quality parts? and what should I start with? ?
Are there any good websites as well pertaining to the wrx wagon?
Im looking to build a sleeper.

A: You could get an entire package from one of the companies below, or build in stages. It depends on how fast you want to go and how much you want to spend. I would recommend an uppipe first.

Q: Who knows if the 2009 Subaru WRX has faulty engine builds and is prone to engine failure?
I’ve been looking at getting a 2009 Subaru WRX wagon due to its performance and winter capabilities. However, thus far over 50 people on the NASIOC site have reported engine failures; Subaru has consequently been replacing the entire turbo engine.

Recent posts suggest the faulty engines are from earlier build dates of 8/08 to 9/08. Can anyone confirm this?

Subaru has denied knowing anything of this sort.

A: There were some failures but not that many. You can’t go by what is said on NASIOC. Too many kids on there spreading shit. And yes it was in the tune. Subaru recently has been doing some funny things with the tuning. The 08 STI has the same problem too as well as the 07 STI. Nothing wrong with the build it self. Some people were just beating on the engine too much and it was causing problems but there have been service bulletins about it and as far as I know, it’s not an issue anymore. Just ask if the car you are looking at either has a build date after the specified time or has had a reflash done to fix any problems. It should say in the thread on NASIOC what months were bad. Thing you need to know is, the new WRX’s have been selling pretty well but you never hear people posting about having no problems. Only people who have had a problem post and it spreads and looks like an epidemic. And it’s not that the dealer you spoke to is in denial. It’s very possible that they have never had one brought in for the problem. Like I said, the percent of failures compared to the units sold is very small.

Q: What is the offset for the wheels on a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon?
I own a 2002 Subaru WRX Wagon and I think it’s time for a new set of wheels. I need to know what the offset is so I can buy me a new set. Also, would rims with an offset of 42 mm fit (securely) on my car? Thanks.

A: I believe the offset is 55mm. Check out tire rack to shop for wheels. They will list the offset to give you an idea of what will fit properly. 42mm may be pushing it, I see many at 48 or 50mm.

Q: What does it take to convert a Subaru Wrx to natural gas?
I have an 03 Subaru WRX and I need to know what parts I need, how much they cost, and if i can figure out how to do it myself to convert my vehicle to natural gas.

A: go to your natural gas outlet and tell them for what car
